The rise of the bin men…

Donkey Jacket

The Donkey Jacket was coined by the working man – with obvious reference to the daily grind of lugging around timber, steel and various other materials slung over the shoulder. Its shoulders are traditionally faced with leather, to deal with manual work and to protect the shoulder.

For AW10 we’ve produced our own - it’s made in a beautiful, soft Melton wool and has a waxed cotton upper and forearms. I’ve already sold a tonne of them, so I’d be quick to avoid disappointment...

Piet Side Table

Monday 16 August 2010

Piet_Side_Table_01

Furniture designer Hugo Passos (a good customer of ours) recently set off on his own after working with SCP for two years. His first creation is the “Piet Table” inspired by Dutch artist Mondrian. It plays with tridimensionality so that its form changes from different perspectives. The leg structure is solid walnut, with exposed joinery and has a matt lacquered surface – available in a variety of playful colours that are available in Liberty (4th floor).

RRP £245.00

Psychopomps // Haunch of Venison London

Tuesday 03 August 2010

This is one of the latest exhibitions on offer at the Haunch of Venison London.    After listening to an interview with Polly Morgan yesterday on Radio 4 we are definately popping down to the HOV to check this exhibition out.

It looks amazing - as you can see with the chandelier sculpture below. We have our own small piece of taxidermy in the shop 'CCTV hawk' and find the whole process really interesting.

Psychopomps

The HOV blurb "Psychopomps is Polly Morgan's first solo exhibition with Haunch of Venison. It consists of four suspended taxidermy sculptures, each poised between metamorphosis and flight. Named Psychopomps after the mythical creatures that conduct souls into the after-life, their historical representation includes Hermes and Charon from Greek mythology, the Valkyries from Norse myth, Anubis the jackal-headed Egyptian God, and in various cultures, horses, bees, birds and shamans."

Has anyone been already?

How to wax a jacket…

Thursday 08 July 2010

One of my most frequently asked questions in the store is, “how do I treat this, can I wash it?” Usually, it’s a rather straight forward answer – but, with waxed cotton, it’s... different.

So I thought I’d post a blog with step by step directions on how to re-wax a jacket, properly.

First off, you’ll need to get together some waxed cotton dressing, a bucket full of ice, a pot of boiling water, a sponge and an old cotton t-shirt/rag - make sure it’s clean though, and a hairdryer.

Wipe down the jacket with the sponge, after damping it in the bowl of ice water (the cold water will prevent the wax from melting when you scrub the jacket, and separate the dirt from the wax).

Put the tin of wax dressing in the boiling water to melt the wax, then dab the old t-shirt/rag with wax and apply sparingly onto the jacket - pay particular attention to pocket edges, collars and seams. The slower you apply the better, and be sure not to get wax on the lining, or any exterior that isn’t waxed (including your Mrs’ tablecloth)!

Once the jacket is fully re-waxed, hang it up and use a hair dryer to even out the wax – this will also restore the shine your jacket once knew and wore with pride.

Please note, it’s easier to re-wax your jacket in the Summer months as the wax doesn’t solidify as quickly – so I guess now is a better time than ever...

Happy waxing!

If you want to know any other hints or tips on caring for garments/shoes, please ask...
